I am a former Seventh-day Adventist pastor and I am frequently asked about my position on Adventist beliefs, the Sabbath and the 10 commandments, including recently by a former parishioner. Thanks to Facebook I’ve enjoyed staying in contact with former SDA parishioners and a few former ministerial colleagues.
I think that a lot of Adventist Church members can not believe that a minister can actually walk away from the Adventist Church and still be available to God in ministry, so there seems to be this hope expressed that I will one day denounce my faith in grace and jump back into the embers of legalistic hell.
No, I won’t.
If you are happy in the Adventist Church, I am happy for you, really I am. Theoretically speaking I think a person can be a member of any number of denominational structured churches and have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. My plea to you is that you would truly allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen your relationship with Jesus Christ, over your church. My message to you is if you are involved in one of the rare SDA fellowships where Jesus is glorified, then I say praise the Lord our Savior, because He is our Savior. But, please don’t trust in your church.
Your church is going through some major organizational leadership problems and those of us on the outside see that your own conferences and unions are lawless in their own church polity. If you are an SDA and part of the SDA denomination, than by the very definition of that you would think you’d be submitting to the General Conference that you claim is “God’s true church” and voice. (But I do understand that you are a fallen people like the rest of us, which is why I left you in 2000 to follow my Lord Jesus Christ where I could grow in His grace not in your culture of legalism.)
So, if you are a former Adventist or wondering about my position on the Sabbath, the Law and grace, please visit my Are You A Former Adventist, Too? page to read my story and some thoughts that could help you avoid backsliding like the foolish Galatians, too.
If you have any questions, please ask me. I am not anti-Adventist or against you. I’m OK with me not having it all together so why wouldn’t I be OK with you not having it all together. The work of convicting truth is the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and I am more than happy with Him doing that and doing it according to His own timing and way. At the Are You A Former Adventist, Too? page I am simply offering some thoughts my own experience that I hope will help guide you in yours.
